Warrington Wolves latest as Ryan Matterson makes decision on his future

Warrington Wolves

Ryan Matterson has left Warrington Wolves and he isn’t likely to make a return to the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

That’s according to the Daily Telegraph, who claim Matterson has played his last game in primrose and blue and won’t be making his loan move to Warrington permanent. As such, he’ll be returning down under and the report claims he’s keen to force his way back into the picture in the NRL.

The forward is contracted for next season with Parramatta Eels but it remains to be seen if he will be remaining with the club with his agent exploring his options.

Ryan Matterson returns to NRL after Warrington Wolves loan

Matterson joined Warrington on loan in July with the forward bolstering Sam Burgess’ options both in the middle and in the back-row.

As a 181-game NRL veteran and former State of Origin star, the move was seen as a smart one as Warrington tried to kick on and claim a play-off spot after hitting something of a slump in form.

Matterson went on to make eight appearances for the Cheshire outfit, with his debut coming on August 1 against Leigh Leopards.

However, he only won one of those eight games, with Warrington’s season falling away to complete disaster. That win came against Catalans Dragons at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, with the Wolves having to come from behind.

Irrespective of Matterson’s fate, Warrington have already made moves to strengthen their pack for 2026 with the services of Tevita Pangai Jr, Toafofoa Sipley and Liam Byrne secured. However, with just six overseas players contracted for next season, it’s fair to say the club could be expected to recruit more players from down under in the months to come.
