Warrington Wolves showed exactly why they are candidates to win the Super League Grand Final as they hammered Huddersfield Giants 66-0.
The Wire scored a total of 12 tries with Josh Thewlis converting nine of those whilst also scoring
Warrington got the scoring underway earlier through Matty Ashton with the winger doubling up and scoring his second after just 15 minutes to make it 12-0.
James Harrison marked his return to the side with a try as he charged over under the sticks after 25 minutes, at which point the buffer broke for the home side.
Wire would then run in three more before half-time with George Williams, Matty Nicholson and young full-back Cai Taylor-Wray all scoring before the break to head into the shed 36-0 up.
It went from bad to worse for Huddersfield Giants who would then see debutant Jack Billington sin-binned for a high shot on Jake Thewlis, who would go on to add his own try minutes later before then converting it.
The Giants had a try of their own ruled out before Warrington ran in four in the last twenty minutes with Matty Ashton completing his hattrick, Cai Taylor-Wray bagging his second before scores from Wolves’ centres Toby King and Rodrick Tai.
Such a huge win has seen the points difference between themselves and Hull KR reduced to just 17 points meaning that a loss for Hull KR against Leeds Rhinos next week and a win for London Broncos, could see Wire jump into second and take a home semi-final in the play-offs.
It was a win that marked the biggest of the Sam Burgess era and the biggest in a Super League round full of huge scorelines.
As for Huddersfield Giants, it’s a huge loss in what has been a dreadful season and they’ll face Castleford Tigers next week in a game where all that is on the line is pride.
