Warrington Wolves “favourites” for Grand Final says Daryl Powell as Wakefield Trinity squad verging on “legend” status

Wakefield Trinity boss Daryl Powell believes that Warrington Wolves are the favourites heading into Saturday’s Super League Grand Final.

Trinity face Warrington for the third time this season, with the victories tied at one apiece. However, that won’t matter come kick-off, with all form going out the window at Old Trafford.

That being said, Powell believes that their opponents are the most likely to get the win, putting his own team as underdogs.

Wakefield have proved that they prefer the ‘underdog’ tag this season, with last week’s emphatic effort against Wigan Warriors proof that when everyone writes them off, they play at their best.

He told the press at today’s Grand Final press event: “I think they’re still favourites, Warrington. They are at the bookies, aren’t they?

“None of that really matters, does it? Wigan were huge favourites at the weekend, but that doesn’t count for anything if the other team plays better than you.”

Powell spoke on how any external noise on who may or may not be the favourites needs to be ignored, with Trinity needing to zone into their own actions and how they execute.

“We’ve just got to focus on our performance,” he stressed. “We’ve been speaking about our mentality, and I’ve been speaking about where we are within our game, the games that we’ve had and how we’ve played those games. Our mentality is set. I don’t think I need to talk too much about that. I feel like it’s already there.

Wakefield Trinity squad teetering on “legend” status says boss

The Wakefield gaffer believes that his side have had the best possible preparation, not only from the play-offs but from the regular season as well.

Trinity played five out of the top seven in their final six rounds, meaning they arrived at the finals battle-hardened.

“Our last four games have been big games. Warrington, Leigh, Leigh, Wigan.

“Our mindset is there. It’s ready to go. I framed it a couple of weeks back when I said you have an opportunity to be a Wakefield Trinity legend.

“That’s the reality of that. Now what we’ve done is go into the game that gives us an opportunity to do that. I think our mentality is in a great place.
