Warrington Wolves duo make short-term loan moves

Warrington Wolves have leaned on the loan system once again to allow two players to gain some match fitness and experience.

Under head coach Sam Burgess, Warrington have been keen to utilise the loan system to either help players retain match sharpness or to give them the chance to gain experience.

Examples include Papua New Guinean centre Rodrick Tai who has spent time with Widnes Vikings in the Championship despite signing an extension last year and being an established starter for Wire during the 2024 season.

Others include plenty of the club’s young guns and this most recent deal has seen two of those youngsters make a move to a Championship club ahead of this weekend’s 1895 Cup quarter-finals.

Sheffield Eagles is the club in question with Craig Lingard’s side having lost a number of key first-team players since early December, including Ben Jones-Bishop (York Knights), Bayley Liu (Bradford Bulls) and Mitch Clark (York Knights).

Ahead of this weekend’s 1895 Cup quarter-final against Bradford, Sheffield have managed to bring in two young talents from Warrington Wolves with Sam Marshall and Joe Bajer arriving on two-week loan deals.

Bajer has already been sent out on loan this season with the forward making the switch to League One Keighley Cougars who he represented in the Challenge Cup back in February.

He was named as Warrington’s Academy Player of the Year in 2023 and Sheffield have confirmed the prop will be available for this weekend’s game against the Bulls.

The other man, Sam Marshall, is the son of Warrington Wolves assistant coach Richard Marshall, also has Challenge Cup experience this year after representing Batley Bulldogs in the competition on loan when they faced off against Leigh Leopards back in March.

A second-rower, he has been a key part of Warrington’s reserve squad in recent years after signing a deal with the club in 2022.

The duo will face a trial by fire in their debut if selected by Craig Lingard with Sheffield, who sit 11th in the Championship, taking on Bradford who sit fifth as the Eagles aim to keep their chances of returning to Wembley alive after having made the 1895 Cup Final in 2024.
