Warrington Wolves boss Sam Burgess gives his take on Joe Burgess try controversy

Warrington Wolves boss Sam Burgess has given his take on the controversy that surrounds Joe Burgess’ first half try for Hull KR. The Robins won 10-8 on the night with a successful conversion being enough to send the east Hull outfit to a Super League Grand Final for the very first time.

James Batchelor got the scoreboard ticking over for KR before Burgess powered over just before the break. Whether the winger actually touched the ball down, though, is a point of debate.

Referee Liam Moore sent the effort to the video referee as a try and while the replays failed to show ball touching grass, the evidence wasn’t enough to conclusively overturn the effort. As such the try stood and it was Mikey Lewis’ successful conversion that ultimately separated the two sides on the final whistle.

The tryscorer has since suggested he never got the ball down in an interview with Sky Sports and now, Warrington boss Burgess has spoken about the incident.

“The second try, the Burgess try, I don’t know if it’s a try,” Burgess told the press after the game. “I don’t know what the ref sees to send it up as a try.

“He had about 10 looks at it and if he takes that long to look at it, how do you send it up as a try?

“It’s very hard to overturn that when you can’t see anything. It’s disappointing that it’s part of the game but probably wasn’t the reason that cost us so we need to get over it.”

The try has sparked debate with pundits and fans online calling for a change of rules and addressing the journalists in the room, Burgess said: “It doesn’t really matter what I think because it’s the people that make the rules.

“I’d ask you guys, what do you think about it? You’re all fans of the game and we all want to see a fair contest.

“When he’s going up, he doesn’t know. I don’t think he knew. No one knows so let the technology tell us the answer. If you can’t make a decision well don’t make a decision, it’s too big.”

Asked whether he had spoken to the referee after the game, the Warrington Wolves boss said: “What’s the point of that? I thought he had a good game and I don’t want to make it about the referee, I thought he had a great game. He does his best every time he refs and he’s in that position, he has to make a call in the moment and unfortunately it wasn’t what we wanted.”
