Sam Burgess has addressed speculation linking Warrington Wolves skipper George Williams with a move to the NRL.
Williams is said to be keen on a move back to Australia with All Out Rugby League and the Daily Telegraph linking the stand-off to Brisbane-based side Dolphins. That’s despite the former Canberra Raiders man being contracted until the end of the 2026 Super League season.
A transfer fee of $400,000 has been mooted to take Williams Down Under at the end of the current campaign and while it seems nothing has been agreed, the talk is that Warrington are resigned to losing their star man, who has missed much of the season with an ankle injury.
Williams spent two seasons in the NRL with the Raiders before joining Warrington back in June 2021. He has made 91 appearances for the primrose and blue outfit since but hasn’t managed to secure silverware, losing two Challenge Cup finals.
With the speculation emerging late last week, Burgess was asked about Williams’ situation on Sky Sports in the build up to Saturday’s clash with Hull FC at Halliwell Jones Stadium. The Wire head coach never confirmed that Williams would be leaving but he notably he failed to rule it out.
Warrington Wolves boss comments on George Williams
“There’s a lot of speculation about George,” Burgess told Sky Sports. “One thing I can say about George is that he’s extremely committed, he’s the captain here and he’s just been a wonderful bloke to have around.
“Everything that’s going on in the background, we’ll leave it alone and hopefully he’s trying to get his best performance on the field and get our team moving forward. That’s all we have to say about George.”
It could be a big few months for George Williams then with the Warrington man expected to captain Shaun Wane’s England side in this autumn’s Ashes series against Australia.
