Warrington Wolves boss Daryl Powell slams ‘atrocious’ aspect of Castleford Tigers defeat

Warrington Wolves’ season was perhaps summed up last night in defeat against the Castleford Tigers.

Daryl Powell’s men were leading 12-0 at half-time before a Castleford onslaught saw them go behind 19-12 before staging a late fightback.

Eventually, Warrington went down 19-18 with Powell unhappy with many aspects of his side’s performance.

“I think at times we have been atrocious at taking chances,” Powell told BBC Radio Merseyside.

“I thought we were playing really smart in the first-half, but we weren’t clinical and we are not clinical.

“I said at half-time, the start needs to be outstanding. (I said) get your first ten minutes right and I think they are going to find it really difficult, but we got penalty, error, try.

“That’s not what we were talking about and that’s where we are. We’re a fragile team at the moment and it’s obvious to see.”

Powell wants to see some huge changes made around the club on a mental scale with the physical aspect not bothering him too much at present.

“We’ve got two games left and we are going to have to dig unbelievably deep. We have to make a huge mental change to this whole place, and that’s pre-season, that’s where we need to go.

“Physically we are tough, but mentally we are not and we’ve got to change that.

“You can almost play this as a recording of previous games.”

That defeat to Castleford last night coincided with Wakefield Trinity’s impressive 18-6 win over Hull KR – a win which left Warrington consigned to second bottom in the Super League table.

And, with just two games remaining against the Huddersfield Giants on Monday and then the Salford Red Devils next weekend, it remains to be seen if the Wolves can actually lift themselves away from 11th.
