Warrington Wolves beat off NRL interest to secure star to new long-term deal

Warrington Wolves Danny Walker

Warrington Wolves have beaten off interest from the NRL to secure the future of Danny Walker. Walker has penned a new five-year contract with the Wolves that will see him remain at the Halliwell Jones Stadium until the end of the 2029 season.

The hooker was subject to interest from Canberra Raiders last year, with the NRL side going as far as to place a bid for the England international. However, that bid was rejected and Warrington will be delighted to have now secured Walker’s services for the peak years of his career.

Walker has been with Wire since 2019 after joining the club from Widnes Vikings and he has made 128 appearances in time, securing his status as one of the best hookers Super League has to offer at present.

The 25-year-old has collected four England caps so far and his performances last season were enough to see him named in the Super League Dream Team.

“I’m delighted to commit my future to the club,” Walker told the Warrington Wolves website.

“It means the world to me and my family. To represent not only my town but now my young daughter’s every week makes me proud and is something I love doing.

“I see a big opportunity here with the squad we’ve got and Sam [Burgess] leading us. It’s something I want to be a part of. I’m excited for the future here now. With the direction the club is going in we’re definitely on the right path.”

Head coach Sam Burgess aid: “It’s great news to be able to extend Danny on a longer term deal.

“He is such an important part of our team. His position in the community and passion for the game is infectious. We’re all looking forward to seeing him grow into the player we believe he is.”
