Warrington Wolves hooker Danny Walker has reportedly been subject to a six-figure bid from NRL side Canberra Raiders and he’s now given his verdict, explaining he is “not sure” where talks are at the minute.
That was reported by Dave Craven for The Daily Mirror with the 26-year-old Warrington Wolves man opening up on his NRL aspirations following reports that Canberra Raiders were interested in his servives.
Reports of the Raiders’ interest in Walker first emerged about a fortnight ago with Yorkshire Live revealing a six-figure offer had been made, something that Warrington Wolves had turned down.
A week down the line and local paper down under, The Canberra Times, reported that the Raiders were unwilling to go above their initial offer with the report describing Warrington’s demands as “ridiculous”.
Since then, Danny Walker has now been named in the Super League Dream Team and at that launch event, the 26-year-old was asked by The Mirror if his head would be turned should Canberra launch another bid.
Walker told The Daily Mirror: “That’s the conversation I’d have to have with the club: with Warrington. I’ve always been honest with the club when it first came about and told them I’d always had that aspiration to play NRL. And that’s not changed.”
Warrington Wolves star confirms NRL aspirations
Canberra Raiders have already fished in the talent pool at Warrington with the NRL side signing the Wolves’ second-rower Matty Nicholson for the 2025 season.
He becomes the latest in a string of English talents to head down under after the likes of Kai Pearce-Paul and Will Pryce, who both joined Newcastle Knights, and Morgan Smithies who is already a member of the so-called Green Machine.
Canberra has almost become ‘Little England’ across the last decade with stars such as Josh Hodgson, George Williams, John Bateman and Elliott Whitehead all calling the Australian capital home.
Walker would have become the latest in that line should a move occur but he’s currently contracted until the end of 2026 and it seems clear that Warrington Wolves have no intent on letting him go, at least not at the current price.
It also seems that the England international is more than happy in his role right now, despite harbouring NRL ambitions as he told The Mirror: “I love playing for Warrington. There’s no doubt about that.
“If nothing comes of it, so be it. I’m more than happy to be playing for my hometown week in week out and we’ll see what happens. From my point of view, if you ask anybody over here if there’s interest from Australia anyone would be open to it and I’m no different to that.
“I’m aware of what’s been going on but if I’m totally honest I’m not sure just where it’s at at the minute. That’s all I can say.”
Named to Super League’s Dream Team for the first time, Walker was one of three Warrington Wolves stars alongside backs Matt Dufty and Matty Ashton, however, Walker admitted that he was a little taken aback by his inclusion as he showed his modesty.
“I was a bit surprised. I feel I’ve had a decent year but there are some great hookers around. Matt Parcell’s been killing it for Hull KR. But I thought I might be in contention. That’s all you can do: get in contention and see what happens.”
He’ll be in contention again on Saturday when Warrington Wolves host St Helens at 5:30 pm as they bid to make the semi-finals for the first time since 2018, when they would go on to lose against Wigan in the Grand Final.
