Warrington Wolves have confirmed that Matty Ashton will miss the rest of the season after injuring his knee in Sunday’s Challenge Cup semi-final. Ashton limped out of the action in the first half of Warrington’s semi-final win over Leigh with the issue and he has been sent for scans this week to assess the damage.
Those scans have shown injuries to both his MCL and ACL, ensuring he will now miss the rest of the season as he embarks on the long and arduous road to recovery. It comes as a huge blow for Sam Burgess, with the Wolves now set to progress through the remainder of the campaign without their star winger and top tryscorer.
It also comes as a blow for Shaun Wane and England, with Ashton likely to have played a key role in this autumn’s Ashes series if not for the injury.
Warrington Wolves confirm Matty Ashton injury blow
A statement released by the Wolves on Wednesday afternoon read: “Warrington Wolves can confirm that Matty Ashton has sustained injuries to his MCL (Medial Collateral Ligament) and ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) which unfortunately rules our winger out for the remainder of the 2025 season.
“Matty suffered the injuries during our Challenge Cup semi final win over Leigh Leopards on Sunday.
“The Club is fully behind Matty and will support him every step of the way with his recovery.”
It means Ashton becomes the latest key man to have been ruled out for Warrington ahead of the upcoming Challenge Cup final. It follows the news the news that Danny Walker is set to be sidelined for up to 12 weeks with a knee issue.
George Williams is also out at present, with the half-back facing a race against time to be fit for the final after picking up an ankle injury last month. The club are following a programme used by rugby union club Leinster which will hopefully see him passed fit just in time to be involved against Hull KR at Wembley.
