Warrington Wolves overseas quota situation ahead of 2025

Warrington Wolves boss Sam Burgess

After years of being title pretenders, Warrington Wolves looked to be the real deal under Sam Burgess in 2024.

Although past Wire outfits tended to fall down the table towards the end of the year, the Wolves only got better as the season progressed.

They were able to produce some real statement victories – most notably a 40-4 win over Wigan Warriors – but fell in the play-off semi-final against Hull KR, and in the Challenge Cup final to Wigan.

For 2024, Lachlan Fitzgibbon and Zane Musgrove signed from NRL, while PNG international Rodrick Tai also came in; these all hold quota spots.

Currently, clubs can have a maximum of seven ‘non-Federation trained players’ in their squad – and these players are defined as those who didn’t play three seasons of rugby in Europe before they turned 21.

With this in mind, here’s their situation in this regard ahead of next year.

Sam Kasiano’s release meant until the recent signing of Luke Yates, contracted through 2026, they had a spot free.

Josh Drinkwater left the club at the end of the 2024 season which would free up a spot and leave Wire one free spot once again.

Rodrick Tai has signed an extension through next year, while Paul Vaughan and Zane Musgrove also have a year to go.

Luke Yates was originally signed on a two-year deal from the start of the 2025 season, but he joined early from Huddersfield Giants for the remainder of the 2024 campaign.

Meanwhile, after an excellent first Super League season for Lachlan Fitzgibbon, he’ll be available for Wire for another two years too.

Finally, fullback Matt Dufty, second in the league for both tries and try assists – and comfortably the highest metre-maker in Super League this season – is also contracted through 2026, meaning he’ll likely be a staple of Warrington sides for years to come.

Most recently, PNG international Dan Russell has signed through 2026 too – he joins the club from St. George Illawarra Dragons, with whom he made eight NRL appearances, and has made eleven caps for his country, scoring twice.
