Luke Yates’ return to Huddersfield was a successful one, as his Warrington Wolves side thumped the Giants 66-0 in their own backyard.
Yates was Huddersfield’s captain, and had been with the side since 2021, signing from Salford Red Devils.
Originally signing on a deal from 2025, he has joined the Wolves early on a loan deal until the end of the season, after which the initial deal will come into play.
This weekend, he starred at prop as his new side demolished his old one at his former home ground.
Currently part of an all-star forward pack, he’s alongside names such as John Bateman and Matty Nicholson who will be NRL players next season.
“They didn’t have much to say” – Former Huddersfield captain opens up on a homecoming with Warrington Wolves
Speaking to The Mirror about his return to the John Smith’s Stadium, Yates said: “It was a bit strange coming back, to be honest. I usually come into this ground and go into the home sheds.
“But once we started playing we were pretty professional. That was the goal coming in. It was just another game of footy in the end.”
Asked whether he received any grief from his old friends and teammates, Yates quipped: “No, not really. On the sideline there were a couple here and there. But once the scoreline ran out they didn’t really have much to say…”
However, he seems to be happy with his new side – one that’s fighting for Grand Final glory in October.
He continued: “We’re a really connected group at the minute. If we keep the same mentality that we’re playing with I believe in us that we can go and do something very special. It’s just keeping ourselves grounded and going in with a good mentality.”
They still have a chance of finishing second if Hull KR lose and they beat another one of Yates’ former sides, London Broncos, by a sufficient margin to overtake the Robins on points difference.
