Warrington Wolves 32-10 Huddersfield Giants: Highlights and match report

Connor Wrench Warrington Wolves

Huddersfield have started the season strongly but have failed to win in their last three including to Warrington today in a game that they were considered favourites for beforehand.

Not the end of the world for the Giants but certainly a reality check for Ian Watson’s men.

Highlight:

Josh Thewlis hat-trick hero
Warrington got themselves in front early on with a quickfire Josh Thewlis double. The first saw him dart over from dummyhalf before notching an outstanding score which could have been an eight-point try had Riley Dean notched both conversions. He didn’t but the young Wolves still had their side 10-0 ahead after 20 minutes. Thewlis then completed with 14 minutes left on the clock to end any hopes of a Huddersfield comeback.

Wolves new look halves
The Wolves were without Gareth Widdop, George Williams and Stefan Ratchford. In their absence, Peter Mata’utia and Riley Dean stepped up in the halves especially Dean who conjured up the Wolves third try for Toby King with a lovely kick.

Wrench seals it for the Wolves
There has been an argument that we’ve not seen Warrington at their attacking best in 2022 but Connor Wrench’s decisive try with a quarter of the game left came from a lovely offload the kind we associate with the Wolves when they were at their best 10 years ago. Perhaps, Daryl Powell’s attacking philosophies are beginning to take hold.

Match Report:

Huddersfield went into the game as favourites and inside the top four but two first half yellow cards for Jack Cogger gave the Wolves an early edge.

He was given his first yellow in the 7th minute for a professional foul and three minutes after his re-introduction was sin binned again. By that time the Giants trailed 10-0 to a Josh Thewlis double the second of which could have been an eight-point try had Riley Dean added both conversions. A sign of the poor discipline of the Giants this afternoon.

Toby King added to Warrington’s lead before an Innes Senior try on the stroke of halftime gave the Giants hope of a comeback. A deserved try for Senior having picked up a new two-year deal this week.

However, a Connor Wrench try midway through the second half off a lovely offload virtually sealed the win for Warrington with Josh Thewlis adding a further try to complete a hat-trick and an afternoon win inspired by Warrington’s youth in the absence of some key players in their spine.

In the last 10 minutes the two teams traded tries with Ben Currie scoring for the Wolves to make it 32-4 before Huddersfield skipper Luke Yates picked up a consolation try four minutes from time to complete the scoring in a 32-10 defeat.
