Warrington Wolves took on Wigan Warriors at the Halliwell Jones Stadium tonight in a rip-roaring Super League affair.
Wigan couldn’t have started any better, running into an early lead through Iain Thornley in the second minute, but Riley Dean responded soon after.
Thornley grabbed a second to send Wigan 12-6 up and Bevan French soon added another, but Matty Ashton replied quickly for the Wolves.
Liam Farrell, however, danced his way through to make it 24-10 at the break, with three more coming before the hour to make it 40-10.
Warrington did reply with two consolation tries, but it was Wigan’s night.
Highlights
Riley Dean sending the Wigan defence for a hotdog for a superb individual score.
Jai Field scything through the Warrington line to feed Bevan French for his try.
Bevan French catching a grubber in his own in-goal area and beating five men to set up great position for Ethan Havard to score was simply sublime.
Talking points
1. Field on grass
Just how good is Jai Field? The fullback is incredible with the pace of an Olympic sprinter. Bevan French’s try epitomised Field’s deadly speed as he ran straight through the Warrington defence.
2. Go youth Warrington
Riley Dean is highly thought of at the Halliwell Jones Stadium – and is there any wonder why? He has all the confidence of an established halfback and is able to cut a defence apart either with his running, passing or kicking game. Will he continue to play when Gareth Widdop comes back?
3. Wigan’s best performance of the season?
Wigan absolutely destroyed Warrington in every department – it was as complete an 80-minute performance as we have probably seen the Warriors play for a good few years. They will be very difficult to stop against St Helens in the Challenge Cup semi-final on this showing.
