Warrington release statement on Josh McGuire as they potentially hint at appeal decision

Last night the RFL confirmed that Warrington Wolves star signing Josh McGuire had been hit with a seven match ban.

The former NRL and Australian international is one of the biggest signings going into 2023 being the only World Cup winner in Super League having played in the 2017 Final which ended 6-0 in favour of Australia against England.

However, after this ban it seems that it will be a while until his Super League debut after he was found guilty of using unacceptable language in Ben Currie’s testimonial.

Warrington have now released a statement on their website about the ban. For the most part, it is an echo of what the RFL stated last night.

However, the difference lies within the Wolves saying “McGuire retains the right to appeal.”

Could this mean they are preparing to appeal the decision?

The club said:

“Warrington Wolves’ Josh McGuire has been found guilty of using unacceptable language (disability discrimination) towards an opponent during his side’s recent pre-season game against Leigh Leopards at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

“McGuire was dismissed during the match and referred to tribunal on a Grade F charge carrying a minimum six-match suspension. He is also fined £1,000 and required to undertake mandatory education.

“McGuire retains the right to appeal.

“Leigh’s Taealoaloa ‘Tom’ Amone, who was also referred to the independent tribunal on a Grade F charge of using Unacceptable Language, was found not guilty.

“The definition of ‘Unacceptable Language’ is stated on page 8 of the RFL’s Operational Rules 2023,  associated grading guidelines are set out on page 332 and sentencing guidelines on page 336.”
