Warrington in shock move for Matty Smith

St Helens v Leigh Centurions

Warrington are on the verge of signing Matty Smith from Catalans for the remainder of the season.

The Challenge Cup finalists are short in the halves and are awaiting the results of Blake Austin’s ankle scan.

With Kevin Brown not able to return this season, Wire made signing a half-back before Friday’s transfer deadline a matter of urgency.

Smith has played 16 times for the Dragons this year but has fallen out of favour in recent weeks.

Despite his struggles in Perpignan, the 32-year-old will provide the Wolves with vital big-game experience having won every domestic honour during his time with Wigan.

Reports also suggested Warrington were attempting to bring Gareth Widdop to the club early with St George Illawarra’s NRL finals hopes over.

But the England international will remain in Australia until the end of the year with Smith now on his way to Cheshire to complete an unlikely move to the Wolves.
