Warrington fullback out for extended period

Warrington fullback Matty Ashton has been ruled out for up to five months after tearing his hamstring.

Head Coach Steve Price confirmed the news. Ashton will have undergo an operation to repair the tear.

The 23-year-old had to be helped from the pitch during Warrington’s 32-22 victory over Toronto a fortnight ago.

Ashton made his debut for the Wolves against Wigan, and had impressed in the fullback slot, playing in all but one of Wire’s games so far.

This included a man-of-the-match performance in a 19-0 victory over St Helens, and his first try during their win over Toronto Wolfpack.

“It was just unfortunate that, when he kicked the ball, his leg was hyper-extended,” said Price.

“It’ll be four or five months and it’s a big shame.”
