Wane favourite to take over from Furner at Headingley

Super League sponsors Betfred have installed former Wigan head coach Shaun Wane as their 2/1 favourite to replace Dave Furner at Leeds , who was sacked earlier today .

Wane won 3 Grand Finals in his 8 seasons in charge at the DW Stadium and is highly thought of in the corridors of power at Headingley . He has apparently expressed an interest in the job today and is an ex player for Leeds , having been on their books in the early 90’s , Wane left rugby league to take up a position on the defensive coaching staff of the Scottish rugby union after winning the Grand Final with Wigan last October . Ironically Wane’s former club Wigan could also be looking for a new coach , but it is believed he may prefer a new challenge .

Former Halifax coach Richard Marshall is next in the betting at 4/1 . Marshall is available and was spotted talking to Kevin Sinfield at the AJ Bell Stadium on Sunday , which turned out to be Furner’s last game in charge . For all he did a great job at Halifax though , there is a big step up to Super League although he has experience of playing Super League sides in the middle 8 .

Interim Coach Richard Agar is next at 11/2 , he could be in with a chance of the job if Leeds results improve over the next few weeks , starting with Saturdays potential Cup banana skin at Bradford .

If you think Leeds may go down under for a coach , Shane Flanagan could be your man at 7/1 . Again he is available after being deregistered by the NRL for flouting an earlier suspension . He has been head coach at the Cronulla Sharks , winning the Grand Final in 2016 .

Castleford coach Daryl Powell is next at 8/1 , but whether Powell would fancy a return to the Headingley hot seat is questionable. If you fancy a former coach to take over then the 16/1 for Tony Smith or 20/1 for Brian McDermott may interest you , I personally think though think Smith is a better fit for Wigan .

Other names quoted include Danny Ward and Anthony Griffin at 10/1 and Jamie Peacock at 12/1 . Interesting outsider has to be Wakefield coach Chris Chester , heavily linked with the Wigan job , at 16/1.
