Wakefield Trinity thump Castleford Tigers as Danny McGuire highlights work to do

Wakefield Trinity comfortably saw off local rivals Castleford Tigers 32-8 at Belle Vue on Friday night as they prepare for their first season back in Super League. The pre-season friendly acted as a testimonial for the recently retired Luke Gale, with the former half-back, who is now a coach at Wakefield, stepping into the fray for the final 12 minutes.

Both sides named strong teams for the clash, with a number of new signings featuring for their new clubs. However, it was Wakefield who drew first blood on the night as Scotland international Lachlan Walmsley touched down.

Cam Scott got the better of his former Hull FC teammate Tex Hoy to score Wakefield’s second before Cas found a response through Innes Senior.

Wakefield truly seized control of the contest just before half-time, though with Josh Rourke and Seth Nikotemo getting over for their first Belle Vue tries in Wakefield colours.

Danny McGuire’s side got over again through Josh Simm, but that was the last thing they had to cheer on the night as Wakefield scored twice more through Ky Rodwell and Caleb Hamlin-Uele to seal a fine night under the lights, with Gale getting his name on the scoresheet by slotting a conversion.

For Wakefield, the win will give them confidence that they are on the right track heading into the new season, not to mention local bragging rights. Castleford have plenty of work to do, though, it seems and McGuire believes his side will be better for having the reality check of sorts.

“It’s good for us,” McGuire told Castleford Tigers’ club media after the game. “We’ve had a smack on the nose here today and that tells me that there’s still plenty of hard work and plenty of things that we need to tidy up before it gets real.

“There’s a bit of frustration and disappointment but there’s a sense of we know where we’re at and we know we can be better.

“There’s an element of disappointment from the players and they’re speaking about fixing things on Monday already so that’s really good to hear as a coach and we’ll be a lot better next week.”
