Wakefield Trinity set to make two more key signings ahead of new campaign

Wakefield Trinity boss Daryl Powell

Wakefield Trinity have made some outstanding signings ahead of the new season as they look to return to Super League straight away.

The West Yorkshire side have drafted in Huddersfield Giants legend Jermaine McGillvary to play on one wing and the Championship’s best player Lachlan Walmsley to star on the other wing.

Walmsley made his debut in the Boxing Day friendly and scored a length of the field intercept try before going off injured with a broken nose as Daryl Powell explained.

Powell also revealed injuries for both Max Jowitt and another new signing in the shape of Iain Thornley:

“So Max, his Achilles tightened up, so he’s not serious, so he’ll be fine. He was saying he could have gone back on but we didn’t want to risk him and then Lachlan broke his nose so he’ll be alright that was on that cover tackle on Darrell Olpherts that he missed so yeah they’ll both be fine, you know there’s there’s no real issues there.

“There was only Iain Thornley that got a bit of whack to his shoulder but I don’t think that’s serious so he should be okay as well.”

Speaking of new signings, Wakefield are expected to make two more signings and Powell confirmed that though did emphasis that their dual registration agreement with Wigan gives them flexibility.

He said: “We’ve got the dual registration with next year so I need to make sure that, well not make sure that there is space for that but almost because you want to be able to make sure that both teams get what they need from it.”

He then revealed that they are likely to add a prop and a backrower to their squad:

“They’ve [Wigan] got some quality young players, I think they’ve got 12 middle players next year so that’s deep, that. It’ll be as deep as anybody else. So we need to use those players for the benefit of both. The front row is obviously one, potentially another back rower although Jay Pitts can play there. We’re always interested in growing growing our squad but that Wigan deal does give us some flexibility which would be important for us.”
