Wakefield Trinity secure young player of the year to new long-term deal

Wakefield Trinity Oliver Pratt

Wakefield Trinity have announced that youngster Oliver Pratt has penned a four-year contract with the club. The deal sees Wakefield secure Pratt’s services until the end of the 2028 season, in what comes as a big boost for the club.

Pratt emerged through the club’s youth ranks to become a first-team regular in the Championship last season, scoring 18 tries in 34 outings for the club. That was enough for the 20-year-old to win the Championship’s young player of the year award last year and he’ll be looking to build on that this season as he approaches his first Super League campaign as a first-team regular.

Pratt has a battle for places on his hands with the centre seeing Cam Scott and Corey Hall arrive at the club over the off-season. But, with his new contract wrapped up, he’ll be backing himself to compete against those with more top flight experience.

“I’m pleased to have been offered the opportunity to stay at the club long term,” Pratt told Wakefield Trinity’s official channels after putting pen to paper. “I’ve loved my time here so far so when the opportunity came up to extend my stay with the club I was buzzing. I can’t wait to see how I develop over the next few years.”

Head coach, Daryl Powell added: “Olly Pratt was one of our best players across all of last season. He is growing into a super confident player on and off the field and we think he will be a Super League outside back for many years.”

The news comes as just the latest boost for Wakefield as they prepare to step back into Super League. The club have been busy when it comes to recruitment, but retaining their brightest young prospects remains a priority, too.

“Olly had a great 2024 season, flourishing while playing consistent rugby led to him winning the Championship young player of the year award,” Ste Mills, Wakefield’s recruitment manager said. “It was a key target for us to keep our home grown talent at Wakefield Trinity and Olly was a big part of this plan.

“I am very excited to see where the next couple of years can take him with his game and we are delighted to be keeping him in the red, white & blue.”
