Wakefield Trinity release nine players including former Leeds Rhinos and Wigan Warriors men

Wakefield Trinity head coach Daryl Powell

Wakefield Trinity have confirmed that nine players will be leaving the club at the end of the 2024 season.

It’s already been some season for Wakefield under Daryl Powell with the club picking up both the 1895 Cup and the Championship League Leaders’ Shield. The West Yorkshire outfit might not be content with that trophy haul, though, as they enter the Championship play-offs in the hope of securing a clean sweep.

Of course, whether they win the Championship Grand Final or not, Wakefield are expected to be welcomed back into the Super League next season due to their IMG grading. It seems nine players won’t be following them up, though, with the club confirming a raft of players are due to leave the club.

The club have already confirmed that both Luke Gale and Jermaine McGillvary will be calling times on their careers this year, with the pair hanging up their boots. Matty Ashurst will also leave after spending 10 years at Belle Vue.

Wakefield have now confirmed that six more players will be moving on at the end of the campaign with Josh Bowden, Derrell Olpherts, Iain Thornley, Toby Boothroyd, Romain Franco and Ethan Wood all leaving.

Olpherts, who tops the Championship tryscoring table with 22, has been with Powell’s side since the start of the season after leaving Leeds Rhinos. His next step remains to be seen but while he is in such good form, he might not be short of options.

Bowden has spent two and a half seasons with the club after joining from Hull FC, while Thornley’s time at Wakefield has been short-lived with the club signing him from Wigan Warriors on a one-year deal. Boothroyd’s departure does not come as a surprise given the amount of overseas players Wakefield Trinity will have for next season when they step into the top flight.
