Wakefield Trinity name 7 new signings in Boxing Day squad to face Leeds Rhinos

Wakefield Trinity promoted to Super League

Wakefield Trinity have named their squad to take on Leeds Rhinos on Boxing Day with head coach Daryl Powell naming seven new recruits.

Trinity have recruited heavily with the Championship winners making more signings than any other Super League side for the 2025 season and seven of their 11 recruits could debut on Boxing Day.

Notable signings not named in the squad include Catalans Dragons pair Tom Johnstone and Mike McMeeken with winger Johnstone previously confirmed to be in line for a return after Christmas.

The winger returns to his hometown club but won’t feature until at least 2025 as he recovers from his season-ending injury sustained against Castleford Tigers.

As well as Johnstone and McMeeken, outside backs Matty Russell and Jayden Myers don’t feature in the squad with ex-Bradford man Myers being the eleventh and latest signing made by Daryl Powell’s side.

Daryl Powell had recently confirmed that there would be a mix of youth and experience with plenty of new signings to feature and he’s made good on his word.

Seven new recruits are named in the 22-man squad with five of those players without a shirt number and likely to feature heavily for the club’s reserves in 2025.

Of the seven new recruits, there is likely to be a chance for Wakefield Trinity fans to see their new half-back pairing with Jake Trueman and Oliver Russell both named – as well as Mason Lino.

How that trio fits into the two starting positions in 2025 will be an intriguing plotline at Wakefield and there could also be a similar competition at full-back after Trinity signed Josh Rourke from London Broncos.

He looks set to start on Boxing Day given that Max Jowitt is not named in the squad but the battle for that position could go all the way to Round One of Super League.

Centres Cam Scott and Corey Hall look likely to start whilst forwards Seth Nikotemo and Matty Storton are both named as well.

Mason Lino, Jack Croft, Isaac Shaw and the re-signed Corey Hall are the only men in the squad to have been part of Wakefield’s campaign that saw them relegated from Super League.
