Wakefield Trinity make history after Super League Grand Final win over Warrington Wolves

Wakefield Trinity are the 2026 Super League Grand Final winners after a 23-10 victory over Warrington Wolves.

Trinity become only the sixth name to be added onto the Grand Final trophy, following in the footsteps of Wigan Warriors, Leeds Rhinos, Bradford Bulls, St Helens and Hull KR.

Finishing fourth in the regular season, no one gave them a chance to win the play-off semi-final against Wigan Warriors, but not only did they sail through that, but they were able to back the victory up on the biggest stage – in what is a night of utter jubilation for the West Yorkshire town.

Just like they did against Wigan last week, Wakefield started moving the ball around on just the second play of the game. Their attacking efforts were almost rewarded after just six minutes as Tom Johnstone looked to go over on the left edge. His score sent Trinity fans ecstatic, however after a formal review from video referee Jack Smith, he was deemed to be in touch.

Wakefield suffered a blow with Jazz Tevaga needing a HIA. Thankfully he passed, but it left Daryl Powell with some early disruption to his bench plan.

Tyson Smoothy’s 17th-minute 40/20 gave Trinity even more field position, with the Yorkshire outfit completely dominating the opening half. An optimistic Corey Hall offload went straight into touch, putting an end to that chance, but minutes later Isaiah Vagana opened the scoring after a great take from Johnstone put the back rower over. Cam Scott would then cross after a wonder pass from Lachlan Walmsley.

Keeping the field position and momentum, Wakefield would score through Jazz Tevaga four minutes before half time. Smoothy darted from dummy half and got close, before Tevaga followed it up with a dart of his own – that one proved successful. With Max Jowitt nailing all three conversions, a Sinfield Old Trafford drop goal came next. Over the years it has been Sir Kevin to slot over the one-pointers, but this time it was son Jack who gave Wakefield a 19-0 lead at the break.

The start of the second half saw Wakefield down to 12, with centre Hall shown a yellow card for a high shot on Arron Lindop. Warrington were able to score once in his absence – Ewan Irwin’s double pump fooled Wakefield, allowing Josh Thewlis to send Lindop over. Irwin’s conversion put Wire back into the contest. Minutes later, Kelepi Tanginoa thought he’d sent Matty Ashton over for a try, but the pass was ruled forward.

After Hall returned, Trinity started to re-gain control. Jowitt, in his final game for the club, needed his finger popping back in by the physios, but then in the following set threw an excellent pass to Johnstone, who went in for a try to win the game.

Lindop added a second with 10 to go, but with the score at 23-6 Irwin needed to kick it to stay in the game. He missed the attempt, and from there Wakefield were able to hold out for a miraculous victory.
