Wakefield Trinity given damning news on Tom Johnstone

Wakefield Trinity can confirm that Tom Johnstone will miss the remainder of the 2022 season after undergoing surgery this week.

Consequently, that means Johnstone has played his last game in the Red, White & Blue before his move to Catalans at the conclusion of the season.

Speaking on the news, Johnstone said: “I am devastated to say that unfortunately I have played my last game for Wakefield Trinity.

“A few months ago, I injured my groin and we had the option to rehabilitate with a chance to play again, or operate which would result in an end to my season. I tried my absolute best to rehabilitate to get back out on the field for the club, fans and my team mates.

“Sadly, after a second opinion, an operation was 100% required.

“This is not the way I wanted to end my time at this great club. I wanted to do everything I could to help leave the club in a good place. I know some people are frustrated with this but I promise to everyone that nobody is more frustrated than me about this.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the coaches, physios and fans for the support over the last eight years.”

Trinity Head Physio, David Cooper, explains the groin injury sustained by Johnstone.

“Tom suffered an avulsion injury to part of his groin earlier in the season during training,” said Cooper.

“Tom was given the option of immediate surgery, which would have ended his season, or attempt to strengthen the area with the hope that he could return to the field at some point in the season.

“After a lot of hard work on Tom’s behalf, his pain improved, but not to a level which would allow him to play. After seeing one of the world’s top groin specialists this week, Tom has now had surgery in order to ensure a full recovery.”

Chief Executive, Michael Carter, is sad to see Tom’s time at the club end in this manner.

“It’s desperately sad that Tom’s time with us will end in this manner,” said Carter.

“The last four seasons have not been kind but we all remember the genuine moments of sheer world class that Tom has given us, probably starting with that try against Huddersfield in 2016.

“It’s been my families honour to sponsor Tom throughout his time with Wakefield, stretching right back to his academy days, and I wish him all the very best for the future at Catalans.”
