Wakefield Trinity have confirmed their captain for the 2025 Super League campaign with one of the club’s new signings taking the armband.
Daryl Powell’s side have experienced huge turnover after returning to Super League and that has seen them sign a total of 11 players and it is one of those 11 who has been handed the captaincy.
Former captain Matty Ashurst left the club to sign with League One champions Oldham whilst leaders such as Luke Gale also departed, giving Daryl Powell the task of finding a new skipper.
The club have now confirmed that England international Mike McMeeken will captain Wakefield Trinity in 2025 with the ex-Catalans forward linking back up with Daryl Powell.
McMeeken had played under Powell whilst at Castleford Tigers but the pair are reunited again for 2025 and with McMeeken in a far more prominent role – both in terms of captaincy and sheer star power.

Trinity announced 30-year-old forward McMeeken as their new captain with a social media post and accompanying statement revealing the ex-Cas man as the new Wakefield captain.
That statement read: “Daryl Powell has confirmed Mike McMeeken as the Trinity captain for the 2025 season.
“The 30-year-old will replace the departed Matty Ashurst in leading Wakefield on the field for their return to the Betfred Super League.
“McMeeken joined the club ahead of 2025 linking back up with Powell who he had previously played under at Castleford Tigers.
“A regular England International and one of the leading forwards in the Super League, McMeeken will work alongside the rest of the Trinity leadership group to push the team forward in 2025.”
Speaking on being named captain, McMeeken said: “It’s a great honour to be named captain of a club with such a great history and to be named captain at the beginning of the journey that we are going on at the moment.
“The great thing about this club and the group we have is that even with me being named as captain we have a number of great leaders in the team with the likes of Jay Pitts and Liam Hood just two of the guys with a vast amount of experience and respect from the rest of the players.
“I am really looking forward to the first game down at the DIY Kitchens Stadium where I lead out the team, hopefully there will be a packed out crowd for that first Super League game.”
Wakefield Trinity get their Super League campaign underway with a visit to West Yorkshire rivals Leeds Rhinos on February 15th, before hosting Hull KR on Thursday, 20th of February.
Head coach Daryl Powell hailed McMeeken’s appointment, stating: “I am delighted to announce Mike McMeeken as our captain for the 2025 season.
“Mike has grown massively over his career as a player and a leader and I believe he will lead our leadership group in an outstanding way, he will lead the team as he does by example, but also with his knowledge and experience of playing the game at international level and in big games across his career.”
