Wakefield Trinity were able to inflict a 30-24 defeat on Warrington Wolves at Belle Vue this Sunday afternoon.
Wakefield were behind or level for every minute until the 77th when Kelepi Tanginoa burrowed his way over as Daryl Powell was left wondering how his side had come away without victory.
But, for Trinity head coach Willie Poching, he was overjoyed at the result.
“It was a bit of a tit-for-tat situation with the scoreboard, I thought we started really well and almost implemented everything we wanted to,” Poching said.
“We just couldn’t quite get over the line, it could have been a real kick in the guts when they got a penalty and scored on the first attack, but our players showed a lot of courage.
“The most pleasing thing was sticking with it when it could have gone against us. We are a team that can rough it out and go with some big teams like we did today.”
Poching also gave his honest opinion on George Williams as well as that tackle by Lewis Murphy which brought Connor Wrench down when it looked as though the Warrington man was destined to score.
“They are pretty good, I thought George Williams banged a couple of people early doors, he was threatening and had a big presence on the game – he was a real threat.
“I thought the Lewis Murphy tackle was a massive play from a young kid, it was a huge play and will be a massive confidence booster for him and is indicative of some of the character that we are seeing.
“You would like to see any kid at any level come up with that.”
“My concern wasn’t the way we were playing, I thought everybody was executing our plan for us to get in the right position, but I think the wind affected some of our kicks and we didn’t quite put them in the spots we wanted to and that was the only concern we had.”
Poching believes his Wakefield side need to look up the Super League table rather than over their shoulders.
“We’ve got to start looking forward and stop thinking about the’ R’ word. it was nice on Wednesday when people were bouncing and there were smiles.”
