Wakefield Trinity boss sends ominous warning to Super League following injury update

The injury crisis at Wakefield Trinity shows no immediate sign of ending, but coach Daryl Powell insists his team will be “incredibly strong” when it eventually does.

Hooker Thomas Doyle could return for Trinity at Leeds Rhinos tomorrow (Saturday), but five first-choice players – including both half-backs – remain on the casualty list at Wakefield.

Most of those are in their middle unit and Powell confirmed it’s likely to be months, rather than weeks, before they are back in action.

“Tommy Doyle will be either this week or the next game,” Powell told his weekly preview press conference today.

“Caleb Hamlin-Uele has got a nerve damage injury and we don’t know when he’s going to come back, Ky Rodwell (knee) is three months, Renouf Atoni (calf muscle) is three months, Matty Storton (knee) is three months – they are all long-term injuries.”

Wakefield Trinity still without starting halves

Of the half-backs, Powell added: “Jake Trueman is still struggling with his back and we’re not 100 per cent on him. Olly Russell (broken hand) is probably three weeks away, so here’s a fair few blokes who are sat watching at the moment, but they all want to be playing and they are all working hard.

“This is a long season. If we get to play-off time and we are in or around the mix and we get those guys back, we will be incredibly strong – if we can have some luck along the way.”

Despite their injury woes, Trinity – who won at Rhinos in round one – began this weekend sitting sixth in the table, just two points behind third-placed tomorrow’s third-placed opponents.

Powell stressed nobody at the club is using the casualty list as an excuse. We’ve got a lot of injuries at the moment, but we haven’t really spoken about it,” he stated.

“We’ll just crack on and the guys taking the field every week are doing an unbelievable job for us, whoever that is. If we start to get players back sometime down the track, it’s going to be a hell of a team to pick.”
