Wakefield Trinity boss Daryl Powell is hopeful that Max Jowitt’s injury isn’t as bad as first feared but he is facing up to being without Matty Storton for potentially the next four months.
Jowitt was forced off the field on Sunday as Wakefield secured their spot in the Challenge Cup quarter-finals with a win over Huddersfield Giants, with the full-back landing awkwardly after claiming a high kick. The worst was feared at the time and Jowitt has undergone a scan this week to assess the damage.
Fortunately for him, Powell and Wakefield, the injury isn’t serious, with the head coach confirming the news in his pre-match press conference.
Powell did have some bad news to share, though, with Storton, who also picked up an injury at the John Smith’s Stadium, set for a lengthy lay-off.
“Matty Storton is a pretty tough one, he’s got a bad knee injury, cartilage damage, which needs an operation,” Powell told the press before this weekend’s game with Hull FC. “He’s going to be out for anything up to four months. He started the season really well so that’s a tough one for him.
“Max Jowitt has had a scan and it doesn’t look like it’s anything major so we’re hopeful he’s not going to be too long but we’re really just treating the symptom because there’s nothing much on the scan.
“We’ll wait and see how he is when he comes out of the boot. He’s in that for a week and then we’ll get a check on him.
“Isaiah Vagana has had a scan and we’re waiting for results on that. Really tough one for Storton, he started the season so well.”
On Jowitt specifically, the Wakefield Trinity boss added: “Obviously he landed pretty awkward. He took a high ball and landed awkward on his right leg.
“I’m hopeful that he’s going to come out of it pretty quick. He’s been an important player for us but that again gives the opportunity for Josh Rourke to come in around the team and see how good he can go.”
