We had a great weekend of Super League concluded with vital wins for Leeds Rhinos and Hull FC with the Black and Whites triumphing over rivals Hull KR at Craven Park after big results on Friday with Wigan Warriors stunned by Wakefield Trinity and Warrington Wolves and St Helens serving up a real classic affair.
However, the weekend was overshadowed by a focus on officials especially after Leeds’ win at Salford Red Devils with many Salford fans taking to social media to vent their frustrations.
One key decision was late in the game where Salford fans felt Ryan Brierley was taken out.
This was something Paul Rowley spoke about after the game:
“I think that if you’re proactive and you don’t chase things I don’t think there is an 11-5 penalty count,” he said on BBC Radio Manchester.
“That said you wouldn’t expect it at home and I don’t think it paints the picture on the six agains because I think we rolled Leeds and we couldn’t get a six again for love nor money so there was a lot of frustration with how the game nearly lost control or did lose control.
“Disappointed in how that side of things went.
“We gave away two points for a late hit and then the identical thing happens on the last play there and we don’t get the penalty.
“Inconsistencies throughout the game on both sides of the coin. They were absolutely massive and I thought the officiating was really, really poor.”
Now though former official Ian Smith has had his say on the decision explaining why it was difficult for official Aaron Moore:
“Very clever by the Leeds player to escort the Salford chaser off from the challenge, unfortunately the ref got himself in a position where the ball was landing on his head and only focused on the catcher and not the chasers.”
