Unhappy Paul Wellens explains St Helens’ defeat to Catalans Dragons

St Helens head coach Paul Wellens

St Helens have lost five of their opening 10 games as three of their last four games as they struggle for consistency.

Their latest defeat came against Catalans Dragons last night as the Super League and World Champions threw away a 12-0 lead to lose 24-12 to the French side.

After the game speaking on Sky Sports, coach Paul Wellens explained the defeat:

“We made too many unforced errors and we released pressure. Obviously Catalans came and they played really well and made it really difficult for us in periods but we certainly didn’t help ourselves.”

Asked if the World Club Challenge hang over is still persisting, Wellens said that the Saints are just “poor.”

“It’s gone,” Wellens said of the proposed hangover, “We’re just poor. We were just poor tonight, we have to accept that. We have had success in recent weeks in moving the ball but I thought tonight we were just reckless with it and made too many errors and gave ourselves too much to do defensively and didn’t hold well enough when we needed to.”

He then stated that the Saints have to improve and quick:

“We have got to get better, the positive is we have plenty of time to get better but we need to make it happen and make it happen quick.
