Tyrone May was as surprised as everyone else when rumours of a Hull KR exit emerged on social media. After helping the Robins to their first ever Super League Grand Final, May was allowed an extended break over the off-season to return to Australia and be with his family.
As such, the half-back wasn’t expected to report to training for day one of pre-season with an early January return date being booked in well in advance. That didn’t prevent speculation cropping up on social media that he wouldn’t be returning to the club for 2025, though, with rumours swirling about his future at Craven Park.
Willie Peters dismissed such a notion in an interview with the Yorkshire Post and the club was able to nip it well and truly in the bud by posting a picture of may in pre-season training a couple of days into the New Year.
May was more than aware of what was being said online while down under with his family and as he readies himself for the new season, he has spoken about it for the first time since returning.
“I woke up one day and I was getting text messages and I was like ‘that’s the first I’ve heard’,” May told Serious About RL. “Unless it’s came from Willie or any of the staff that was important I just brushed it off and kept going about my business and what I was doing back home, training with my brothers and hanging out with my family.
“It was a bit of a shock to get the messages but that’s the life of social media, people pre-empt things when they don’t see someone at training and it’s understandable but they’re all pretty false.
“I stayed fit. My brother was preparing for his pre-season as well and a few of the boys all had off-seasons as well so we were just pretty much training and hanging out. That was pretty much it on rotation, train, eat and go back home and spend time with the parents and that.”

While suggestions of a move away from Craven Park in the off-season were inaccurate, May is in the final year of contract at Hull KR. As such, his future beyond the end of the season is moving into focus.
Any decision May makes though looks set to hinge on the fate of his brother Taylan, who is set to appear in court in March after domestic abuse allegations.
“I’ve only been here for three weeks now so I’ve just been trying to knuckle down and get training in,” he added when asked about his future.
“Really I just want to wait and see what happens really and wait for my brother to get through his issues and then I can work with him and see what he wants to do.”
