Today Warrington Wolves gave important minutes to two men they recruited ahead of this campaign in the shape of former Hull KR outside back Greg Minikin and former Leeds loanee and Featherstone Rovers star James Harrison.
Minikin started on the wing for the Wolves whilst Harrison got the nod at loose-forward. Josh Thewlis’ brother Jake played at centre and Tom Inman – who featured for the Wolves in 2021 – started at nine.
A strong team from the Warriors, a side with a lot more first grade experience than their opponents Wigan whose highest profile player was perhaps teenager Brad O’Neill. Just two weeks ago O’Neill won a Challenge Cup Final to be fair but finds himself in the reserves owing to the return of Sam Powell from suspension.
The other notable names were that of Sam Halsall at centre, Ramon Silva at prop and Logan Astley and Matty Nicholson who both recently made first team debuts against Huddersfield with the latter bagging a brace.
However, with two seasoned pros in their side, Warrington had more experience though it didn’t count for much as Wigan’s youngster shine – a sign of the good work the Warriors always put into their academy and why they have sustained success.
Six Adam Jones had a prolific game as did Tom Mitchell on the wing who scored twice. Astley also crossed for a try in a 40-6 as Wigan scored 40 unanswered points.
Not the return Minikin and Harrison would have wanted but its still minutes under their belts.
