Two Super League clubs set to chase Leigh Leopards star

Leigh Leopards

Leigh Leopards seem set to release one of their quota players to make space for the arrival of David Armstrong from Newcastle Knights.

The move for Armstrong comes after they were unable to snap up Ryan Brierley from Salford Red Devils after he signed a new deal with the club and also missed out on Tristan Sailor.

This was particularly disappointing with reports that he had been granted a visa but was not granted a release from Brisbane Broncos to make the move over to Leigh.

However, as they look to reinforce their options at fullback and also on the wing having also reportedly made an unsuccessful move for Derrell Olpherts at Leeds Rhinos, they have found Armstrong but to sign him they would be required to let go of one of their quota players with Ben Nakabuwai the player previously linked with an exit when Leigh were linked with Sailor.

There is only two Super League clubs likely to move for any released Leigh player due to the quota rules and they are Warrington Wolves and Salford Red Devils.

Leigh have seen a 250 percent increase in memberships. Over 4,800 members are now enrolled at the club.

There is still an opportunity to pass the 5,000-membership mark with a month to go before the start of the season. Supporters can still renew or subscribe via direct debit by making the missing payments at time of sign up. For example, an adult White Card membership would cost ÂŁ100 on sign up, then ÂŁ25 per month from February until September inclusive.

The introduction of the Red Card membership has been very popular with over 600 members already and only 20 of those are existing members that have taken that option. This is a fantastic way to be a member of the club and enjoy exclusive benefits and priority access to ticket sales.

Club owner Derek Beaumont said on Leigh Leopards’ website: “The take up by the town has been remarkable and highly motivating to me. Having invested further in a third marquee signing and strengthening the squad with additional numbers and a reserves team, it gives me great support that it is what the people of the town want to see.

“The support of our retail merchandise has also been fantastic with more than 3,000 of the memberships purchased including a replica shirt or polo and many more purchased at the stall. It is this support that has seen me invest in building a mobile shop to be located outside the Leopards Den at Leigh Sports Village to assist with supporters being able to make purchases more easily and in particular on match days.

“I am currently working on the early part of the calendar for the pre match entertainment, in particular around the opening fixture against the Giants and I hope to be able to release details of this in the next week which will also no doubt create some demand for tickets.”
