Two Super League clubs eye up Kallum Watkins amid Salford Red Devils latest

Salford Red Devils Kallum Watkins

Kallum Watkins is among the raft of Salford Red Devils players being monitored by other Super League clubs.

With Salford being put under special measures at the back end of last year, officials from the RFL have been assessing the club’s finances as they strive to help secure the future of the club. Those officials are due to report their conclusions to the club this week, with player departures now seen as an inevitability.

As such, Super League clubs are keeping an eye on the situation at the Salford Community Stadium and some appear ready to pick off the Red Devils’ most high profile players. As captain of the club, Watkins is certainly one of Salford’s most important figures, but it is understood that two top flight sides have him in their crosshairs.

Wakefield Trinity are thought to be one of those keeping tabs on the 33-year-old who can play either as a centre or a winger, while other clubs’ interest could be piqued should salary cap dispensation be made available by the governing body.

Watkins has been with Salford, his hometown club, since returning from the NRL in 2020 and in that time he has made 90 appearances. He still has one year left to run on his contract, though, and it is not known whether the player would entertain the notion of a move elsewhere, particularly at this stage of his career.

The former England international is one of several players being eyed, with Marc Sneyd being strongly linked to both Hull FC and Leigh Leopards. The half-back still has two years left to run on his deal, but according to Hull Live, the Black and Whites have made a big push to secure his return following the release of Jordan Abdull, which still hasn’t been confirmed by the club.

Deon Cross is known to be another target for the Black and Whites with an eye to strengthening their outside back ranks, while it is understood that Tim Lafai has admirers, too.
