Two more Wigan Warriors players leave on eve of Super League on short term deals

Whitehaven Rugby League have announced the loan signing of Wigan Warriors Jack Douglas & Junior Nsemba on a month’s loan with both players having already had experience of playing at the LEL Arena in 2023.

Douglas who is a winger who has been promoted to the Wigan first team squad for the 2023 season ahead of joining the club’s academy system in 2019 scored the first try for a young Warriors side in the pre-season encounter at the LEL Arena in January with Nsemba starting the game in defeat for Haven is a Wigan St Pats junior who made his debut for the Warriors vs Hull KR in the Round 26 Super League meeting last season.

Head coach Jonty Gorley spoke about the duo saying “ After seeing the duo when we took on Wigan and seeing how athletic they are I jumped at the opportunity to bring them in once they become available as they fill gaps in positions where we are short. We’ve seen what they can in the game against ourselves, Junior was a danger all afternoon while when Jacob got the ball in space he’s got pace to burn. It’s good to be able have them in the squad for the next few weeks.”

Director Ashley Kilpatrick spoke about the signing of the duo saying “ We’re delighted to bring the lads up for the next month and good for us to be able to bring the youngsters into the club. I think this show the good working partnership with Wigan that started with Darrell Goulding and now with Shane Eccles. I had a good conversation with Shane when we played Wigan as well as Matty Peet about getting players on loan.

We’re excited to get Junior and Jacob on board for the next month. Junior was one of the top targets to try and get on loan if we got the chance because of highly rated he is at the club. Similarly Jacob has just been promoted to the first team squad and showed his speed against us back in the friendly and we are hoping he’ll get the opportunity to show that this time in a Haven shirt.”

This news comes after London Broncos welcomed Harvie Hill and Zach Eckersley to the club with both players signing a loan agreement lasting until the end of the month from Wigan Warriors.

Both players join with Super League experience to their names having made their debuts for Warriors against Hull KR last season.

19-year-old Hill plays as a middle while Eckersley – also 19 – is a skilful centre.

Both players are eligible to play in Sunday’s Betfred Championship visit to Whitehaven plus the Broncos’ remaining fixtures in February against Halifax Panthers and Sheffield Eagles respectively.

Mike Eccles said: “We’re really pleased to welcome Harvie and Zach to the Broncos. We’ve been working closely with Wigan in recent weeks and are delighted to reach an agreement.

“Harvie is a very good middle and current England Knights squad member. He’s tough and can carry the ball hard, he’s a good addition for us.

“Zach is a great prospect too and is an exciting skilful player. He’s a big unit who again can carry the ball well and is a great defender.

“We look forward to monitoring their progress through the month.”
