Transfer news: Wigan Warriors man commits to Hull FC

Update on Wigan Warriors loan players

Wigan Warriors signed Tiaki Chan in the close season from Catalans Dragons. Chan had a breakout season in 2023, playing 12 times in their run to the Grand Final, where they were eventually defeated by Wigan. Chan did not feature in that game, and has found first team opportunities hard to come by since his transfer.

Chan has made just three Super League appearances in Cherry and White this season. He played in Wigan’s fixtures against the Huddersfield Giants, London Broncos and Leigh Leopards. He recently joined Hull FC on loan, coming straight into their side for their defeat against London.

Chan’s loan move was initially for a two-week period. However, Wigan’s coach, Matt Peet, has now clarified Chan’s situation.

Peet explained that there is no fixed deadline on Chan’s loan. Wigan and Hull will instead assess their position week by week to decide when Chan will return across the Pennines.

Speaking in his weekly press conference, Peet did single out Chan for praise, stating he has been impressed by his attitude. Despite FC having no fixture during the Challenge Cup window, Chan stayed in training in an attempt to win over his new colleagues.

“Tiaki is determined to commit himself to that group,” Peet said. “He stayed there training last week when they didn’t have a game. I think he wants to earn his stripes there and earn the respect of the Hull players and staff. A real big credit to Tiaki for that.”

Chan will form part of Simon Grix’s Hull squad to face Castleford Tigers on Friday night. FC will be desperate to bounce back following a morale sapping defeat against Super League’s bottom side, London. The Black and Whites will be hoping Chan can help lift them to just a second win of the season.

Peet also provided an update on another of Wigan’s young players who has spent time away from the club on loan recently. Sam Eseh had a short spell with the Castleford Tigers, before returning to Wigan. Peet revealed he is now in contention to form part of the 21 man squad for the first time since joining the Cherry and Whites.

“If he is selected in the 21, I think it will be a great experience for him,” Peet continued. “To be amongst it, he deserves it the way he’s applied himself.

“He’s played Super League before, and I think it’s another step in his development to be amongst that squad and around the players, experiencing the warm-up for example.”

Eseh joined Wigan from Wakefield Trinity in the off season. He made 15 Super League appearances during Wakefield’s 2023 campaign which saw them relegated to the Championship. Despite the team’s struggles, Eseh won the club’s young player of the year award, before moving to the Warriors.
