Hull KR have been active in the transfer market in recent weeks. KR are busy building their squad for 2025, after a strong 2024 season. The Robins currently sit fifth in the Super League table, but suffered Challenge Cup heartache in their semi-final defeat against Wigan Warriors at the weekend.
The side from East Hull have made a flurry of signings recently. They added Jack Brown, from city rivals Hull FC, in a swap deal which saw Yusuf Aydin move in the other direction. Jack Broadbent has hit the ground running since joining the club from Castleford Tigers. Danny Richardson also joined from the Tigers, to provide competition for Mikey Lewis and Tyrone May.
Along with Aydin’s departure, Ben Reynolds also left KR, having only recently joined. He moved across the city to join Aydin at the Black and Whites. Now, they have confirmed one player, who is potentially out of contract at the end of the season, will leave the club on loan to join a Championship side.
Hull KR hooker joins Dewsbury Rams
Hooker Reiss Butterworth, 25, has left KR on loan. He joins the Dewsbury Rams on an initial two-week loan with immediate effect. Butterworth was the League One player of the year in 2023 with the Rams. He was instrumental in their promotion to the Championship for the 2024 season. Butterworth will now return to the Rams on a short-term basis.
Butterworth signed a one-year deal, with an option for a one year extension, when he joined the Robins. It has not been confirmed whether KR will take up the option to extend his deal. The Robins released a short statement which confirmed the deal.
“Hull KR can confirm Reiss Butterworth has joined Dewsbury Rams on a two-week loan with immediate effect.
“The 25-year-old will rejoin Dewsbury after helping the West Yorkshire side to achieve promotion to the Championship last season.
“The Club wishes Reiss the best of luck during his loan spell with the Rams.”
Butterworth strengthens the Rams’ squad ahead of two difficult away fixtures. Dewsbury face consecutive away trips to the Sheffield Eagles and Wakefield Trinity.
Butterworth hoping to boost Rams’ survival hopes
Butterworth’s return is a major boost for Dewsbury. The Rams are currently bottom of the Championship, with just one win from their opening eight games. He excelled in the Rams’ 2023 promotion season, captaining the side, playing in 21 games and also helping them to the fifth round of the Challenge Cup.
Butterworth has already spent time on loan away from KR this season. He had a short spell with Super League’s bottom side, London Bronco, playing three games. The Hooker has also played one game on loan at Featherstone, with his move to former club Dewsbury his third loan spell of the campaign already.
He will be keen to make an impression during his spell with the Rams, as he looks to secure his future for the 2025 season. With Jez Litten and Matt Parcell ahead of him in the pecking order at Craven park, it appears that he may have to look elsewhere to secure an opportunity to play regular first-team games.
