Toulouse Olympique 18-32 Warrington Wolves: Highlights and match report

Warrington journeyed over to Toulouse as overwhelming favourites but it wasn’t plain sailing for the Wire as they went in search of a third consecutive win to start the season.

The Wolves had to deal with some early pressure but first half tries from Toby King and Josh Charnley put them in the driver’s seat. They would prove the difference as the two teams drew the second 40.

For Warrington it’s another win which leaves them alongside St Helens and Wigan at the top whilst for Toulouse it shows they’re headed in the right direction.

First half brace from Toby King sets Wire on their way
Toby King missed the first game of the season but has come back with a bang scoring a vital double in the first half of today’s game to send Warrington on their way to a third consecutive win of the season. King can thank his halfbacks for the tries with the first coming from a neat George Williams kick whilst his second was engineered by young Riley Dean who stepped up in place of Gareth Widdop this eventing.

Williams from long range
If the game was in Warrington’s favour at the break, it certainly was after it when George Williams ran 75 metres to score Warrington’s fourth try putting them certainly beyond reach.

Debut delight for Ashall-Bott
Thrown in at the deep end just days after switching from Huddersfield to Toulouse, Olly Ashall-Bott notched his first try for Toulouse as they stayed competitive until the very end. They scored the last two tries of the game through Romain Navarrete and Maxime Stefni

Match Report:

Warrington, having won the opening two games of their season, went into the game as overwhelming favourites especially considering Toulouse’s winless start. However, it was Toulouse who applied the early pressure until Riley Dean – stepping up in the absence of Widdop – came up with an intercept to swing momentum their way.

A minute later, Toby King got the Wolves in front grounding Williams’ kick. However, Toulouse wouldn’t go away with Chris Hankinson nailing a penalty to half Warrington’s lead.

However, a lovely Stefan Ratchford pass set up a try for Josh Charnley who has started the season magnificently. That got Warrington in control again before King’s second of the game gave the Wolves a healthy 16-2 lead at the break.

At the start of the second half, the Wolves virtually secured the win when they amassed an 18-point lead when Williams went 75 metres to score the try of the match. Further scores from Daryl Clarke and a second from Charnley were simply icing on the cake for the Wire.

Toulouse did show what they can do in what was perhaps their best performance of the season so far even drawing the second half. Olly Ashall-Bott notched a try on debut whilst forwards Romain Navarrete and Maxime Stefani scored late tries to take the gloss off Warrington’s win and give Toulouse a boost going into next weekend’s clash with Wigan.

Warrington will be hoping to use the win to build into a seismic clash against last year’s league leaders Catalans Dragons who come to the Halliwell Jones on Friday.
