Toronto Wolfpack announce embarrassing decision following controversy

Toronto Wolfpack have been one of the rugby league enigmas of the late 2010s and early 2020s.

After bursting onto the sport’s scene in 2017, the Canadian side eventually made it all the way to Super League following a win over Featherstone Rovers in the Million Pound Game in 2019.

However, with 2020 came an incredible period of uncertainty due to the onset of Covid-19 and the financial problems this brought for the transatlantic side.

And, unfortunately, after such a period of positivity, the Canadian dream evaporated in a puff of smoke as Toronto left Super League and were later denied re-entry.

Ever since, the Wolfpack has been trying to rebuild within the confines of North America and are set to play games in the North American Rugby League (NARL) competition this year – though when the fixtures will be announced is anyone’s guess.

However, after bringing in a major sponsor earlier this year, the Canadian side have now had to renege embarrassingly on that deal, much to the disappointment of their fans.

The Wolfpack’s Instagram page posted: “Toronto Wolfpack has decided to remove its jersey sponsor energy producers inc and all ties to that sponsor As they did not align with our ethos or that of our other partners we will release our jersey with a new sponsor in the coming days. Thank you for your support and understanding.”

It still remains to be seen what exactly the future holds for Toronto after such an explosive start to life in rugby league, but for a club that was once able to lure sporting hero and icon Sonny Bill Williams on a million-pound deal, to see the demise to the present day is a sorry state of affairs.

And, this latest kick in the teeth is further evidence of their fall from grace.
