Toronto secure megastar signing

After recent speculation, Nine’s Wide World of Sports have revealed that the Toronto Wolfpack have signed Sonny Bill Williams to a $10 million deal over two years, making him the highest paid player in Rugby League.

It is believed that only $300,000 of Williams’ wages will be counted towards the Wolfpack’s salary cap due to the player being a marquee signing.

The Wolfpack will be heading into their first ever Super League season in 2020, and doing so with a multiple time Rugby World Cup winner and multiple NRL premiership winner.

SBW has not played Rugby League since 2014 when he left the Sydney Roosters after just two seasons to link up with the All Blacks ahead of the 2015 World Cup in England.

He has remained in the 15-man code since but now the 34-year-old will return to his roots but not as he knows it, playing for the world’s first transatlantic sports team.

Sonny Bill Williams will play under former Leeds head coach Brian McDermott at Toronto.

The mega deal will likely raise a few eyebrows considering Sonny Bill’s age, but it will almost certainly attract a new and bigger audience to Super League ahead of 2020.

It remains to be seen whether this will be Williams’ last career move, given he was widely expected to finish his career back in the NRL with either the Roosters or his first club Canterbury Bulldogs.
