2022 is nearly over, so it is time to reflect on the year that was and that is no different in rugby league.
So, here’s the top five British rugby league moments in 2022.
5. Seventh Heaven
It was seventh heaven for Bevan French as he set a new Super League record for the most tries in a game as he ripped Hull FC to pieces by himself as he scored seven tries at the DW breaking Lesley Vainikolo’s record from 2005.
4. Leeds Rhinos the comeback kings
As Leeds came back from the dead in 2022 after being second bottom in April, the Rhinos remarkably clawed their way into the play-off mix and dramatic wins were the order of the day. The Rhinos clawed back from behind at Headingley to claim vital wins against Huddersfield Giants and Castleford Tigers. But the best of the bunch was of course when they came back with 12 men against Catalans Dragons in France to defeat the French in Golden Point. Special mention to Salford Red Devils for their own dramatic come back from looking out of the play-off mix to the semi-finals.
3. Late Drama seals record Challenge Cup win
Huddersfield Giants were in the lead in the Challenge Cup Final entering the dying moments until a piece of brilliance from Harry Smith and Liam Marshall, Wigan Warriors secured a record 20th Challenge Cup Final win.
2. Fourmidable St Helens
St Helens made history in 2022 as they won a record fourth Grand Final in a row. After defeating Salford Red Devils in 2019, Wigan Warriors in 2020 and Catalans Dragons in 2021, for the first time ever they defeated Leeds Rhinos at Old Trafford. They won 24-12 thanks to tries from Matty Lees, Jon Bennison, Konrad Hurrell and Mark Percival.
1. Wheelchair rugby on the rise
Wheelchair rugby is well and truly on the rise after England won a legendary World Cup Final against France to put the sport well and truly on the map. The sport is now in the public consciousness, now more than ever.
