Top five current wingers in Super League

Continuing our series rating the top five Super League players in each position, we move on to one of the hardest lists to narrow down in wingers.

Super League is full of talented wingers and trying to narrow down the top five isn’t an easy task with many big names left out.

With that being said, lets go ahead and look at our list of top wingers in Super League.

5. Ash Handley

The Leeds Rhinos high flyer has established himself as one of the top wingers in Super League over a number of years now and his stock is continuing to rise. Not only is he a fantastic finisher and try scorer, he led the league in metres made which is a key element of a modern wingers responsibilities. After making the Grand Final in 2022, the Rhinos look set for another big year as they push for Old Trafford glory once again and expect Handley to be a key player for them in 2023.

4. Joe Burgess

Burgess is the first of two Salford wingers on this list as the Red Devils came within 80 minutes of a second Grand Final appearance in four years. Burgess formed a great partnership with centre Tim Lafai and was the grateful beneficiary of the big Samoans powerful running and offloading game. Burgess scored an impressive 15 tries in 2022 and with another pre season under their belt together, Salford’s left edge looks to be deadly again next season.

3. Ken Sio

The second Salford winger on this list is Ken Sio, who continuously lingers near the top of the try scoring charts as one of the most electric finishers Super League has seen. Scoring 26 tries in a strong Red Devils side, Sio was unlucky to not be top try scorer in 2022 and will be looking to be back on top in 2023. He also made the fourth most metres out of any player in the league which highlights why he is so high on this list and also how he earned a call up to the Samoan World Cup squad.

2. Bevan French

French is probably unlucky not to gain top spot on this list after his astounding season last year. After missing the first three months of the season, French returned with a bang scoring 31 tries including a record seven in one game against Hull FC. Blessed with frightening pace, French and his fullback Jai Field formed a great parternship as they tore teams apart with their speed and will continue to do so in 2023.

1. Tommy Makinson

The outright best winger in Super League is Tommy Makinson, the St Helens great has been the best winger in the league for half a decade now and is constantly the blueprint for young wingers coming through. A try scoring freak with his acrobatic corner finishes but also the best winger in the league for the difficult carries out of his own end, always landing on his front allowing Saints quick ruck speed to get his team on the front foot. A perennial winner with Saints and he is showing no signs of slowing down. So dominate Makinson has been in his position there is an argument to be made whether he makes the all time Super League team.
