Tony Smith slams decision-making in Hull KR’s heartwrenching defeat

Hull KR head coach Tony Smith was proud of his side’s season, but felt that they didn’t do themselves justice in the 28-10 defeat to Catalans Dragons.

The Stade Gilbert Brutus was rocking in a sell-out crowd, but Rovers never really looked like overcoming the French side and Smith acknowledged the disparity between the two teams.

“We’re disappointed, obviously it was well deserved for Catalans they outplayed us and kicked us to death,” Smith said.

“Our first-half just wasn’t good enough – scorewise we were still in the game but our skill levels weren’t good enough tonight to ask enough questions.

“It’s been a god journey for most of us and we will learn from it, but we were trying to get big plays rather than working our opponents around.

“We were off it but they tried really hard – they’re hurting at the moment but we will be fine.”

Smith is keen for his players to improve on this year and kick on.

“We’ve got to earn the right again next year, we like to think we will improve.

“We’ve got players who are ready for the next step, but we need a good off-season and a good pre-season to be able to challenge Catalans and other teams a bit more.”
