Tony Smith slams ‘big’ Super League clubs

Hull KR head coach Tony Smith has always been a supporter of scrapping promotion and relegation.

At the start of the season, the veteran Australian felt it was harsh to relegate anyone in 2021 due to the uncertain time the sport was going through, stating that it threatened to bankrupt clubs.

And, as the Robins gear up for a semi-final clash with Catalans Dragons on Thursday night at the Stade Gilbert Brutus, Smith was honest about the fact that he believes the bigger clubs are merely in it for themselves.

“The initial thought of the salary cap was that it was there to even out the playing field, but that’s not been the case,” Smith said.

“It’s difficult to break the shackles of getting out of that bottom area and getting into the top area and that’s probably why the big club like it as it is.

“It keeps the big clubs big and the little clubs little.”
