Tony Smith reveals concussion symptoms are still hurting Hull KR star

With concussion and head knocks being treated completely different in rugby league to two decades ago, the sport is sometimes in a quandary.

As former rugby league players get ready to sue the governing body for alleged negligence, the increase in anxiety surrounding concussions is tough on both the player and their club.

For one current Hull KR forward, that anxiety continues to eke through after months out due to concussion.

Tom Garratt suffered a head knock at the end of March and has not appeared since, with head coach Tony Smith unsure of a time frame or what Garratt’s condition actually is.

“We have cleared him of some tests but there is more to go and it’s a case of if something is ruled out then we have to find out what some of his symptoms are about,” Smith said.

“If it’s not this causing it then we’ve got find out what is causing it.

“So, we are making progress but it is slow as he still has symptoms and we are still no clearer overall.”

It’s a big loss for the Robins with Garratt in good form before the injury, and, with it being his first year in Super League, the former Dewsbury Rams prop was certainly heading in the right direction.
