Super League side Hull KR have appointed former Leeds and Warrington Coach Tony Smith as their head coach at least until the end of this season
Smith takes over from Tim Sheens who had his contract terminated yesterday with Rovers 11th in the table , only 2 points ahead of bottom side London .
Aswell as Warrington and Leeds ,where Smith led them to winning the 2004 Grand Final , he has also coached at Huddersfield where he led them to Super League early in the last decade . Smith spent 9 years at Warrington winning 3 Challenge Cups but couldn’t land them a Grand Final win despite getting to Old Trafford 3 times .
The 52 year old also took England to the 2008 World Cup where they lost in the semi final to eventual winners New Zealand .
Smith spoke to Rovers TV about his new role at the club saying ” It’s been a whirlwind couple of days, but I’m very excited about the opportunity. I’ve had a good break and I’m very excited. With the talent available, there’s a good, strong chance of climbing the ladder to a place which is far greater to where we are at this moment.”
His 1st game in charge will be the crucial clash against fellow strugglers Wigan on Sunday .
