Tony Smith addresses what Josh Griffin said to receive red card

Yesterday, talk was dominated by Josh Griffin’s red card.

The Hull FC star was sent off for what he said to official Chris Kendall at halftime.

But what did he say to receive such a harsh punishment?

Tony Smith has addressed this.

He said on BBC Radio Humberside: “I’m not sure what he said mate but you know I’d suggest it was with some sort of language you know or profanity. I’m not sure.

“I didn’t see what happened, I was walking down to the tunnel, down to the dugout, I was told what had happened and so we just shifted into, okay, how do we play with 12 men mode, and talked about that at half time, and the spirit that we would need to continue to do the job well.

“All I’d suggest is that there was probably some frustration crept in.

“That’s the thing about our sport and I love about our sport, that we’ve got to protect those things. We don’t want to be a sport where we can criticise referees on the field and question them. It’s got to be done respectfully. We do have protocols that we’ve got to follow and I think we should be really stringent on those.

“After it’s all investigated, I’ll be able to speak more clearly on that I’m sure.”
