Tommy Makinson explains shocking defeat to Leigh Leopards

Last night newly promoted Leigh Leopards stunned Champions St Helens to make it two defeats in a row for the World Champions who lost to Leeds Rhinos last week.

It was also two wins in a row for Leigh thanks to late tries from Zak Hardaker and Joe Shorrocks on loan from Wigan Warriors.

It was many people flummoxed as to how this brilliant Saints side have come unstuck against two teams who lost their first two games of the season.

Speaking to Saints TV after the game, Tommy Makinson attempted to explain what went wrong:

“We knew it was going to be tough against Leigh who have just come up and with a full house tonight and we just let ourselves down in the second half.

“We performed great in the first one, the game was in control and we let it slide. It is not up to our standards. Sometimes you get games like that and we have to be better and improve and we will do that.

“We have to be better, what we have achieved in the past, we have to put that to bed but we all know what we can do as a team and we know what wins us games and we just have to get back to doing that. It’s that simple really. It is not a massive fix.

“We have to compete at Saints standard which we didn’t do last night.”
