Tom Burgess wants shock career move

Tom Burgess has signed for Huddersfield Giants on a three-year deal from 2025.

Tom Burgess has been linked with stunning moves to both Leeds Rhinos and Warrington Wolves after his brother’s move to take over the Wolves as Head Coach this year. He also revealed recently that he turned down interest from Wigan Warriors.

But according to the NRL.com, Burgess could be set for a much more surprising move after his time with South Sydney Rabbitohs comes to an end. They suggest that even though he turned down a move to the NFL as a player, he could be open to a move to the sport as an agent.

This comes after Burgess spoke about American football and his thoughts on the game. He said to NRL.com: “It’s a different sport, very specialised positions and he suited that one down to the ground. He was a perfect specimen for that position.”

Burgess went on to reflect on how close he came to making the move to the NFL which is a move plenty of rugby league players have made in recent times. Of his flirtation with American football, Burgess said: “I was definitely looking at going down that track.

“I was serious about it because I was there. It’s something I’m glad I went and had a look at but then I realised it wasn’t for me. There’s an element of [not] having grown up with the game but for me, I’m used to action all the time.

“And I think I probably would have got bored playing that sport. No disrespect to the sport. I love it. It’s a great sport. I got the offer [to extend] from Souths and I just went ‘I’ll sign with Souths’.”

On making the move, he said: “It depends what you’re driven by I suppose. You’ve got to earn money in your career but you’ve got to be driven and if you do that, money will come on top of it.

“I was already contracted at Souths and I was just looking down that path, potentially. I think since then they’ve created a whole new pathway for international players which wasn’t there when I was there. Who’s to say? It might have been different if I’d gone now.”

Of course, the NRL is headed over to America at the start of next year and Burgess, who has played in America with England, said: “It’s exciting for rugby league try new things. I’ve played a game over there before and there’s great opportunities over there for rugby league.

“It’s great that the NRL have come up with this and I’m lucky enough that my team’s going over there. I think my wife’s happy too. She’s got a trip over too.”
